It’s 7pm, I’m sitting at the back of the technical rehearsal, and I’ve had to borrow the Assistant Producer’s power cable because my computer has run out of juice and I really MUST write a blog entry before Jen (SPF marketing supremo and blog-mistress) tells me I can’t have any more frozen mai tais in Chinatown Brasserie over the road from the Public Theater, and not just because last time we did that I ended up lying face down on the floor as part of an elaborate but alas now forgotten joke.

I’m all in between places right now.

If you had to pinpoint me on a map, well, I’m in the East End of London. (Bethnal Green, where Bill Sykes lives in Oliver Twist.)

Mentally, however, I’m all over the shop.

Joanna – our brilliant director – has spent the last three weeks assembling a great cast, an exciting composer to provide a score and developing a bold, abstract design.

I’ve spent the last three weeks transposing the action of my play Future Me from the UK to America.

Joanna said, quite rightly, that she didn’t want the Britishness of the script to be a barrier between the audience and the action of the play. ‘They should be seeing themselves on the stage,’ she argued. She also didn’t want the actors to have to grapple with the British accents in a short rehearsal period.

I persuaded myself it would be a simple job. But this turned out to be a good example of the blind optimism without which initiating any complex task would seem too daunting.
